The mission of Johnston High School, in partnership with the parents and the community, is to promote the academic, social, physical, and psychological well being of each student. Welcome to the Panthers Den! Johnston Senior High School, home of the Panthers, is a public high school located at 345 Cherry Hill Road in Johnston, RI. Established in 1968, Johnston Senior High School enriches and educates a student body of 917. JHS for short, excels in sports, music, arts and has numerous clubs. It is located in a semi-urban district. Their school colors of Colombia blue and white are worn proudly at sports games and school functions. Gerald K. Foley is their current school principal with Dr. Elizabeth Mantelli and Zachary Farrel serving as his vice principals. The purpose of this context statement is to help parent's and guardians in deciding if Johnston High School will provide their children with a proper education.
Community Background
Johnston Senior High School is located in a semi-urban community. There is a city feel to Johnston but also gorgeous greens to go along with the city...the best of both worlds! With a large white population, Hispanic and Latino pride is not missed.

Johnston comes in above the median family income when compared to Rhode Island and US. In 2010, the family income was $73,341 while Rhode Island's family income was $70,663 and US at $62,982. The median household income also came out on top with $55,394 while the states household income was $54,902 and US income at $51,914. With Johnston's income high, their poverty level is low. Families below the poverty level is 6% while RI is 8.4%and US at 10.1%. The people below the poverty level is also lower than RI and US. Johnston came in with 9% while RI and US came in at 12.2% and 13.8%. Yes, Johnston is is in trouble with their poverty levels, but not as bad as compared to Rhode Island.

We have three districts; Johnston, Barrington and Central Falls. Each district has the NECAP, Teachers, Students, services offered to students and attendance as well as graduation rates. Comparing the three districts, Johnston comes in behind Barrington but does better in some cases than Central Falls.

With a 917 student high school, the teacher-student ratio is 1:10. The states ratio is 1:11, while Barrington's is 1:12 and Central Falls has the same ratio with 1:10. A students expectations are to take responsibility for their learning but teachers this ratio just proves that teachers are always there to help and push them to reach their potential.
Each District offers subsidized lunches and educations services.

The attendance rate is high at Johnston at 92% meeting the state percentage. Central Falls rates falls behind with 87% and Barrington comes out on top with 96%. Chronic absenteeism is at 19% for Johnston, 5% for Barrington and 32% for Central Falls. Within four years, the graduation rate is 82.9%. That is somewhat high but not as high as Barrington which had a rate of 96.6% and Central Falls with a lesser rate of 70.8%. The percent of high school drop outs is 7.9% for Johnston, a low .3% for Barrington and 8.2% for Central Falls. 5.7% of Johnston district received a GED, 0% at Barrington and 1.2% at Central Falls. Those kids who are still in school the percentage is 3.5 in Johnston, 3.1 in Barrington and 19.8 in Central Falls.
Johnston is a great school district with a good income and the city/greens environment. However, there are always cases of incidents that lead to suspensions.
The graph shows that the compared to statewide incidents, Johnston Senior High School is extremely low, which is fantastic. The main incidents for suspensions are skipping class, leaving school grounds and for being disrespectful, which needs to change.
The tax and funding of JHS can be compared to Central Falls and Barrington.

Johnston Senior High School challenges students to achieve high standards in the classroom as well as in sports and the arts. Coaches, teachers and staff strive to help the students reach their fullest potential. In sports, they were Division II Super Bowl Champs in 200 for Football. In the arts, their band scored scored second place and their chorus scored first place competing against other New England States. Johnston Senior High School is also a 2005 Rhode Island Department of Education Regents' Commended School. Students, faculty, and staff bleed blue and white and all show perseverance, confidence, and strength that panthers symbolize. The only real way to get an accurate feel for Johnston Senior High School is to set up a visit today and come see the close knit community that is Johnston Senior High School.
